Over the hill recovery equipment: winches, planks and repairs
Stop spinning the wheels. Check whether you need traction, clearance or a different pulling direction, then attach the winch from stable ground. If no useful pull remains, return to a discovered cabin through the map.
Quick guide
Steam full release. Stop on stable ground before selecting equipment; use your current input prompts.
- Stop and inspect the wheels, underside and safe exit direction.
- Use automatic winching for a suitable nearby tree, or select both attachment points manually.
- Pull toward ground the vehicle can actually reach; steer along the exit line.
- If it stays wedged, release the pull and choose a different angle or tool.
- With no workable recovery, open the map and select a discovered cabin to respawn.

A short recovery-job example: attach the rear winch, tow the stranded vehicle toward the cabin checkpoint and check the completion reward. This is a towing objective, not a multiplayer joining tutorial.

Diagnose the stop before choosing a tool
If the wheels turn but the vehicle slides or stays still, look for firmer ground and reduce the climb. If the underside rests on a rock, a straight forward pull may keep it wedged: back away or pull sideways toward a lower edge. If it is overturned, use the jack when it is available in your loadout.
Choose a destination for the recovery first: a flat shoulder, the previous track or another reachable patch of ground. Our recovery advice is to pull toward that destination, rather than toward whichever tree happens to be directly ahead.
Connect the winch and clear the obstruction
Use the input prompts for your selected layout. Pick the ground you want to reach before selecting an anchor; a tree straight ahead is unsuitable if the cable would pull the body further into the rock.
- For automatic winching, centre a suitable nearby target in the camera and use the displayed winch command.
- For manual winching, open the tool radial menu, choose the winch, select the vehicle attachment point and then a valid world target.
- Pull and steer along the intended exit. Once the wheels are on firm ground with room to roll, stop pulling and drive clear.
Change an unsuccessful pull
If the cable tightens but the vehicle presses into the same rock, release it and select a new attachment direction. A rear or side connection can move the vehicle away from a wedge before a forward pull becomes useful. Check that the intended line does not take the vehicle over a drop.
Tools solve different gaps in the route. Planks provide a crossing surface; a portable anchor provides a winch target where there is no useful tree; repair kits address damage. At the mechanic, prepare the loadout for the route you intend to drive. Check remaining consumables before committing to a second attempt.
Tow a recovery-job vehicle to its destination
For a towing job, use the destination shown by that job. Getting the stranded vehicle moving is only the first step: the task ends when the towed vehicle reaches its required checkpoint and completion appears.
- Attach a winch from the rear of your vehicle to the stranded vehicle.
- Tow toward the cabin/checkpoint shown by the recovery objective. Use a line with room for the towed vehicle.
- Bring the vehicle through the indicated checkpoint and check the completion reward before disconnecting.
Use a cabin when the recovery has no safe exit
A cabin is a fallback point after discovery. Discover one before a hard expedition; an unexplored cabin is not an established recovery point. In co-op, park the helper on stable ground before attempting a two-vehicle pull.
- Open the map. Find a cabin you have already discovered.
- Select that cabin and follow the respawn prompt. Check that your vehicle has returned there.
- Choose a different approach or change the equipment loadout before returning to the obstacle.
If it does not work
| What you see | What to do next | Ready to continue when… |
|---|---|---|
| The winch selects the wrong tree | Move the camera target or switch to manual attachment. | The cable connects to your intended target. |
| The cable pulls but the body stays wedged | Release it; change the vehicle attachment point and pull away from the obstruction. | The underside clears the obstacle. |
| No reachable anchor or useful angle | Use a suitable tool from the loadout, or respawn at a discovered cabin. | You reach firm ground with room to drive away. |
